The five techniques

Every row, every column and every color gets exactly one cat. All five tricks are that one rule used in different ways. When you're stuck, try them in this order.

Last tile
A color, row or column has only one tile left that isn't crossed out. Its cat has to go there.

Fenced in
Pick a color and look only at its open tiles. If they're all in the same row, that color's cat will land in that row. A row holds just one cat, so no other tile in that row can have one. Cross them out.
Same with columns. It also works backwards: if every open tile in a row is one color, that color's cat is in this row, so cross out that color everywhere else.

Squeeze
Pretend a cat is on a tile. It blocks its row, its column, its color and the 8 tiles around it. If that would block every open tile of some other color, the pretend cat is impossible. Cross the tile out.

Locked group
Fenced in, but with two colors at once. If two colors only have open tiles in the same two rows, their two cats will fill those two rows. No other color can use them, so cross out every other tile in those rows.
Also works with three colors in three rows, and with columns.

What-if
A longer squeeze. Pretend a cat is on a tile, cross out what it blocks, then place any cat that is now forced. Keep going. If some color, row or column ends up with no open tiles, the pretend cat was wrong. Cross that tile out.
